BannerImage About Shah-E-HamdanShah-e-Hamdan Mosque, also known as the Khanqah masjid, built in 1395 is located on the banks of Jhelum in Srinagar. It is considered to be one of the most ancient mosques in Srinagar and is counted among the most visited by Kashmiris and travelers through centuries. Its entry is restricted only to Muslims only. Through centuries, it has been destroyed and rebuilt thrice and the current shrine is based on a square plan. Following an ancient architectural pattern, the structure is supported by a rough walled base. Roofs of this prayer ground are pyramid shaped. The wooden shrine has a marvelous carved roof which is indeed a marvel to behold. Ceiling of this mosque deserves special mention because of its special Kashmiri craft called Khatamband. This is an art of constructing the ceiling fitted with small wood pieces preferably walnut and deodar, in a geometrical pattern. It’s all hand work and reflects the artistic skills of the artisans in the region. These works are not pinned with nails and are an art form which deserves appreciation. There are hanging bells, ancient religious sermons and ancient inscriptions inside the shrine. Its double-arcaded balconies add to the structures architectural beauty. In the first tier of the building, these verandahs run all around and in the second tier, arcaded balconies extend in all the four sides.
