Jamia Masjid

Built with spectacular design, the Jama Masjid in old city of Nowhatta in Srinagar was built in 1402 A.D during the reign of Sultan Sikandar in Kashmir. Lavishlydesigned from inside as well as outside, this mosque is one of Srinagar’s main tourist attractions. It reflects Indo-Saracen architecture through its 370 wooden pillar design and an impressive courtyard. This is the biggest mosque in the entire Kashmir valley and large number of Muslims gathers here especially on Friday for prayers. Although the mosque stands right at the middle of a busy market but the overbearing architecture, eye catching design never allows tourists to miss it. It is also considered as one of the most sacred mosques in India. A popular belief among the Muslims is that, when they offer prayers in this scared mosque all their sins are forgiven. The original mosque was extended by Zain-ul-Abidin, son of Sultan Sikandar in later years after this mosque was built so that it could accommodate 33,333 Muslim members for offering prayers.
