Mamal temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Mamal Temple is an ancient treasure that nestles in the spellbinding region of Pahalgam. The ancient shrine is situated on top of a mountain that lies along the banks of the glacial Kolahoi stream. During the reign of an erstwhile king, the sacred complex was established. The shrine mostly used to be festooned with gold then. According to local legends, this blessed site was guarded by Lord Ganesha, who was appointed as its doorkeeper to prevent the entry of outsiders. This is how the temple got its name – comprising words 'mamal' that means ‘do not go.' The holy shrine holds great religious significance in Pahalgam, as devotees throng it throughout the year.
