Spituk Gompa


Spituk Monastery is situated on the top of the gompa hill and at the distance of approximately 8kms from the Leh town. It is a three-tiered spirit shrine. It is a well known Buddhist monastery in Leh. This region is blessed by the Arhat Nyimagung. The Spituk Gompa which is a Buddhist Monastery was introduced to manastic community by Od –de. Rinchen Zangpo, a translator came to this place once and said that this monastery would become an exemplary religious community. And since that time this monastery was known as Spituk which means Exemplary. This monastery was founded as red hat institution and in 15th century, this was taken over by yellow hat sect. This monastery has a giant statue of Kali and 100 monks. One of the most popular attraction of this place is Gustor festival. Every year a well known Gustor festival is held at Spituk. This festival gets organized from 27th to 29th in the eleventh month of Tibetan calendar. During this festival the rituals and customs of local people are shown and a sacred dance is also held. This monastery is the home of 100 monks and a giant statue of goddess Kali. There are few more monasteries Saboo, Stok and Sankar which are the branches of the Spituk Monastery.
