Padum, named after Padmasambhava who was known to be the second Buddha, is one of the important tourist destinations of Ladakh. There are rock carvings belonging to 18th century present in the close vicinity of this region emphasising the influence of Buddhism. A number of noteworthy Buddhist monasteries are present here among which are Stragimo Monastery that is home to 30 lamas and another one in the village of Pibiting , build in the shape of a stupa . It is also a land for a small Sunni Muslim community. Karsha Gustor, Zanskar or Spitok Gutor Zanskar are the two main festivals celebrated here. The very famous black hat dance performed by the monks of Geluk-Pa is performed at these festivals which marks the warding off of any kind of evil prevailing in the valley. The festival comes to an end by cutting and distributing a sacrificial cake. The best time to visit this place is considered to be during the months of June to October.
